Sashes
Cherokee sashes created by Martha Berry are similar to those worn by tribal members during ceremonial occasions prior to the Trail of Tears. The Traditional Cherokee Sash featured below won a 1st Place ribbon at the 6th Annual Cherokee Homecoming Art Show in Tahlequah, Oklahoma. It is currently in the art collections of the National Museum of the American Indian in Washington, D.C.Â
Pre-1840 Southeastern Woodlands sashes included pre-European contact Mississippian pottery symbols. The symbols, the materials, and the bead color are all typical of those beautiful old sashes.
